Web Design & New Media Grad Nominated for a Webby Award

Sunday 24 July 2011

Academy of Art University alumnus Jeff Yen received a coveted nomination for a Webby Award for his project, an intuitive redesign of the Academy’s Shuttle Service website.
The Webby Awards is the leading international program honoring excellence on the Internet in several categories, including Website, Interactive Advertising, and Mobile Web.
Jeff's project, Campus Shuttle Service, was nominated in the Webby Awards Student category. It uses GPS information and Google Maps to provide real-time tracking of Academy shuttles. Students could use the website, which included a prototype for an iPhone app, to plan out shuttle routes based on their class schedule.
In addition to the Webby Awards nomination, Jeff's Campus Shuttle Service site was a Communication Arts Webpick in March.
Jeff learned of the Webby Awards from Director of MFA Studies, Web Design & New Media, Lourdes Livingston. His achievement in being nominated for a Webby Award has inspired him to continue to create more useful Web designs.
Jeff graduated from Academy of Art University with an MFA in Web Design & New Media. When asked which of his Academy instructors was most influential to him, Jeff said that he was thankful for many of his instructors. "If I have to pick just one, it would be Alex Pineda," he said. "I always got some inspiration when talking with him about my project. He really pushed me when I was developing my idea."
Coming to the San Francisco from Taiwan, Jeff saw a difference in design concepts between the two cultures. "One of the important things I learned is design in the US. It's kind of culture shock in the beginning, but after a while, I learned about the culture and designing for it.
Thinking back to his time at the Academy, Jeff notes that his web design classes gave him the skills needed to produce a professional-level project from a design concept. "The instructor that I have to mention is Michael Kemper. He taught me about visual Web design and improving the usability of my project. Without him, this project couldn't be as polished as it looks right now," Jeff said.
Currently, Jeff works at AVANT Experience in San Francisco, a digital solutions and product company. He enjoys the opportunity to use design to make things happen. “What I'm doing there is helping our clients achieve their goals,” he said. He also continues to think about new and exciting projects he could design, but doesn’t want to reveal his plans. He'll only say, with a smile, "Later."
