Latest Issue of 180 Magazine

While the designers of the School of Fashion’s Fall 2011 Collections prepared for their show, the students behind 180 Magazine eagerly anticipated the official launch of the newest issue.

The issue debuted at Academy of Art University’s fashion show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center.
Even amidst the excitement and glamour of dozens of fashion shows throughout the week, 180 Magazine draws attention from the top names in fashion. The magazine has been read and raved about by the fashion industry, including editors from theNew York Times and the Washington Post.
Students from across the school collaborate to create the magazine, which covers fashion, art, photography and culture at the local, national and global level.
Jessica Liggero, a Fine Art student at Academy of Art University, drew and painted the fashion illustrations for the article “Jirawat & Jessie.” She was inspired to contribute to the magazine by her longtime love of fashion and drawing.
“I would like to be a part of the fashion world,” Jessica said. “So if I do not end up designing clothing, then I can contribute to fashion by creating original artworks and illustrations of someone else’s designs, ultimately enriching their original vision.”
The issue’s Design Director is Web Design & New Media student Harry Go. Harry, who has been involved with 180 Magazine since 2009, is excited by the opportunity to pursue his interest in fashion as well as design. As Design Director, his work encompasses a wide variety of visual aspects of the publication.
“I work with Michael Carbaugh to design the layout of every page of the magazine. Because there are only two of us, a lot of times we have to multitask. Sometimes I have to do photo retouching too,” Harry said.
Carbaugh, who is the Creative Director of 180 Magazine, has been impressed with the focus and dedication of the team who works on the publication. “They take away experience in a professional environment, unlike any other in San Francisco,” he said. “They work on teams that share the common goal of producing the best product possible, regardless of resources and location.”
Fashion Merchandising student Danielle Wallis worked with Carbaugh on the photo shoot for the feature “Landing on the One.” Though the shoot was physically demanding, the team worked together to create beautiful imagery for the location shoot.
In addition to her work on the publication, Danielle is a contributor to Fashion School Daily, the School of Fashion’s blog. Both roles have been rewarding professional experiences.
“Working on 180 Magazine and Fashion School Daily has taught me real-world, industry skills that I can apply to my future career as soon as I graduate,” she said. “From meeting deadlines to working in the Fashion department’s version of the Vogue offices, I can’t put a price on the countless experiences and skills I’ve gained.”
That level of professionalism is what makes 180 Magazine so eagerly anticipated. As Editor-at-Large of the magazine and Fashion Journalism Coordinator Dino-Ray Ramos explains, “We teach journalism for people who like fashion, not the other way around.”
Students learn to pitch their story ideas and take a piece from start to finish. The end result is both a beautiful and intriguing publication and an opportunity to build a portfolio of clips that can be shared with potential employers.
The reward of creating this unique publication is having it read and enjoyed, both by those in San Francisco and the attendees of Academy of Art University’s fashion show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. As Harry says, “Looking at the final product is always worth all the hard work!”
